Boresighting the process of aligning sights (usually optical) with the bore of the firearm - is a process that I feel every firearms owner should use. I recommend that you get the tools to be able to do this with any firearm you own. There are a variety of tools to facilitate the process, but I recently found a set of tools that have proven to be ultimately indispensable in our facility the Alpec Team ACCURIZER units.
The ACCURIZER boresighters consist of lasers built into a case that is the exact dimension of a specific round of ammunition. When inserted into the chamber of a firearm, they emit a bright red laser light straight down the center of the bore. Being that it is aligned within the chamber itself, this is about as accurate as you can hope to get. They also offer the advantage of being able to sight in your optics without ever firing a shot.
ACCURIZER boresighters are available for rifles, shotguns, and pistols. The basis for the long-gun products is the Model 8508 Master .223 Accurizer. It is the size of the brass from a .223 round, and works very well in AR-15s and other .223 and 5.56mm firearms.

The secret to the operation is that the rear of the shell and the body are separated by a rubber gasket. Thats an electrical insulator. There are 2 #393 watch batteries inside the unit, and the rear of the shell is the battery cap. When it is inserted into a firearm and the bolt is closed, the resulting metal-to-metal contact completes the circuit and causes the laser to activate.

They project a bright red beam that is as bright as allowed by law. They run 650nm at less than 5mW. This is pretty much the standard as it is regulated by the government. It is more than sufficient for this application - but it is best to work during lower-light conditions.
I mentioned that the Model 8508 is the basis for their rifle and shotgun products. This same unit is used in other calibers of rifles and even in shotguns by inserting it into a sleeve to adapt it to the desired size. Here is what it looks like setting up the 12 Gauge sleeve.

Other sleeves available include the following&ldots;
300 Weatherby
.243/.308/7.62x51 NATO
30.06/35 Whelen
300 Winchester Magnum
.50 BMG
20 gauge - and many more
There are also dedicated ACCURIZER units in most pistol calibers including .45ACP, .40 S&W, 9mm Luger, .45 Long Colt, .357 Magnum and .38. If you have a pistol, odds are an ACCURIZER is available for it.

They are VERY easy to use, and highly effective. They even give you a target to assist with sighting in at various ranges. This may vary with the specific characteristics of the ammunition and caliber you are using.
Here is the procedure&ldots;
Clear The Chamber. Follow ALL of the rules of firearm safety

Set the firearm in a bench rest. I use a Lohman SIGHT VISE for this purpose.

Insert the ACCURIZER into the chamber and close the bolt/slide

See the red dot coming down the center of the bore. Place it at the desired distance - note as close as in these photos. Please note that in this photograph the dot looks MUCH larger than it really is due to the focus of the camera.

Adjust your optic so that the crosshairs/red dot appear right on top of the ACCURIZER laser dot.
Thats all there is to it. Right now, you are sighted in as good as you can ever hope to get.
One of the initial tests I ran with these was sighting an EOTech on an older AR-15. I ran the above procedure and took it out to the range. The shots were dead on. I could not have asked for any better.
They are just as useful for sighting in externally mounted lasers on rifles and shotguns. Just put the laser dots together and youre done. It cant be any easier.
In the case of non-adjustable lasers such as the LaserMax Internal Pistol lasers, it can give you a good benchmark to see where the bore is in relation to the LaserMax unit. They should be within a couple of inches at 20 yards. Its a good sanity check for testing new units and verifying the calibration on units that have been in service.
I have been testing these over a period of 1 year. They are durable and their point of aim has never changed. I have had no problems with any of them. I havent even been required to change the batteries yet.
You can purchase the .223 Master ACCURIZER and the 12 Gauge sleeve as a kit - item # 8525 with an SRP of 199.95. The #8507 .45ACP ACCURIZER has an SRP of $149.95.
I love this product! ALPEC TEAM offers the best selection of laser boresighting devices I have seen, and they are just about the easiest to use. I cant say enough good about the ACCURIZER laser boresighter units.
